WORD PROBLEMS 2


The sum of four consecutive numbers is 498. Find the 3rd number.

Solution

Let the numbers be as shown in the table below

1st number
2nd number
3rd number
4th number
TOTAL
n
n+1
n+2
n+3
498

Then, n + (n+1) + (n+2) + (n+3) = 498

4n + 1+2+3= 498

4n + 6 = 498

4n = 498 – 6

4n = 492 

4n = 492
 4        4

n = 123

3rd number = n +2

                   = 123 + 2

                   = 125

Hence the 3rd number is 125
