If log 2= 0.3010; find the value of log 250,000 without using tables.

solution

log250000=log(1,000,000÷ 4)

=log1,000,000 - log4

=log10⁶ – log2²

=6log10 – 2log2

=(6x1) – 2(0.3010)

=6– 2(0.3010)

=6 – 0.6020

= 5.398

Hence log250,000 = 5.398
