ALGEBRA 9

Find w in the following equation;

2w - w-3 = w
7         2      3

solution

2w - w-3 = w
7         2      3

The LCM of 3, 7 and 2 is 42. So, we multiply by 42 throughout

42x 2w - 42(w-3) = w x 42
       7              2             3

642x 2w - 2142(w-3) = w x 4214
       17              12         31

(6 x 2w) - 21(w-3) = (w X 14)

12w - 21w + 63 = 14w

-9w + 63 = 14w

63 = 14w + 9w

63 = 13w

63 = 13w
13    13

63/13= w

Hence w = 63/13
