PERFECT SQUARES B1

If zx2 - 8x + 1 = 0 is a perfect square, find the value of z .

Solution

In zx2 - 8x + 1 = 0;   a=z, b=(-8) and c=1.

For the perfect square, b2 = 4ac

(-8)2 = 4 x z x 1

64 = 4z

644z
 4      4

16 = z

Hence the value of z is 16

TRY THIS......

If zx2 - 16x + 4 = 0 is a perfect square, find the value of z .
