SIMULTANEOUS EQUATIONS D1

Solve the following equations by substitution method.
4x - 2y = 6
x - y = -1

Solution
4x - 2y = 6----------- (i)
x - y = -1---------- (ii)

from equation (ii)

x - y = -1
x = -1+ y ----------(iii)

Substitute equation (iii) in (i) above,

4x - 2y = 6
4(-1+ y) - 2y = 6
-4 + 4y - 2y = 6
-4 + 2y = 6
2y = 6 + 4
2y = 10
2y = 10
 2     2
y = 5
From equation (iii)
x = -1+ y ----------(iii)
x = -1+ 5
 x = 4

Hence x=4 and y=5.

TRY THIS……………….

Solve the following equations by substitution method.
5x - 6y = 3
x + y = 5
