SIMULTANEOUS EQUATIONS 1A.

Solve the following equations by elimination method.
4x - 2y = 6
3x + y = 17

solution

4x - 2y = 6 ……………….(i)
3x + y = 17……………….(ii)

By using elimination method,

1(4x - 2y = 6
 2(3x + y = 17

Then we add to eliminate y first

   4x  - 2y =   6
   6x + 2y = 34
   10x  + 0  = 40

10x = 40                     [Dividing by 10 both sides]
10      10

x = 4

from equation (1),

4x - 2y = 6
4(4) - 2y = 6
16 - 2y = 6
16 = 6 + 2y
16 -  6 =2y
10=2y

y = 5 [after dividing by 2 both sides]

Hence x=4 and y=5.

TRY THIS........

Solve the following equations by elimination method.
3x - y = 8

x + 2y = 26
