PROBABILITY A3

In a family of two children, find the probability that there is one boy and one girl

Solution

From the tree diagram,

n(E) = 2, n(S) = 4

P(E)  =  n(E)
             n(S)

P(E)  =  2 = 1
             4    2

Hence the probability that there is 1 boys and 1 girl is 1/2.
