If log 2= 0.3010; find the value of log 160,000 without using tables.

solution

log160,000 = log(16 x 10,000)

=log16 + log10,000

=log2⁴ + log10⁴

=4log2 + 4log10

=4(0.3010) + (4 x 1)

= 1.2040+  4

=5.2040

Hence log 1,600,000 =5.2040
