Find a if the midpoint of a line from (a, 6) to (8, 10) is (10, 7)

Solution

x1=a, x2=8, y1=6, y2=10.

(10, 7)= (x1 + x2, y1 + y2)

(10, 7)= (a + 8,  6 + 10)

                2          2

(10, 7)= (a + 8, 16)

                 2      2

Equating values of x;

10= a + 8

         2      

2 x 10= (a + 8)  x 2 ¹

               2 ₁     

20 = a + 8

20-8 = a

a = 12.

Hence a=12
