SIMULTANEOUS EQUATIONS 1

Solve the following equations by substitution method.
    2x - 3y = 6
    x + 5y = 16

Solution

2x - 3y = 6 ----------- (i)
x + 5y = 16 ---------- (ii)

From equation (ii)

x + 5y = 16
x = 16- 5y ----------(iii)

substitute equation (iii) in (i) above,

2x - 3y = 6

2(16- 5y) - 3y =6
32 – 10y – 3y = 6
32 – 13y = 6
– 13y = 6 - 32
– 13y =  - 26

13y =  - 26
  -13        -13

y = 2

From equation (iii)

x = 16- 5y
x = 16- 5(2)
x = 16- 10
 x = 6

Hence x=6 and y=2.

TRY THIS……………

Solve the following equations by substitution method.
4x - 2y = 6

x + y = 9
