 If log 3= 0.4771; find the value of log 900,000 without using tables.

solution

log900,000=log(10,000 x 9)

=log100,000 + log9

=log10⁵ – log3²

=5log10 – 2log3

=(5x1) –  2(0.4771)

=5– 0.9542

= 4.0458

Hence log 900,000 = 4.0458
