If log 2= 0.3010; find the value of log 5,000,000 without using tables.

solution

log 5,000,000 = log(10,000,000÷ 2)

=log10,000,000- log2

=log10⁷ – log2

=7log10 –log2

=(7x1) – (0.3010)

=7– (0.3010)

= 6.699

Hence log5,000,000 = 6.699
