If log 3= 0.4771; find the value of log 9,000 without using tables.

solution

log9,000=log(1,000 x 9)

=log1,000 + log9

=log10³ – log3²

=3log10 – 2log3

=(3x1) –  2(0.4771)

=3– 0.9542

= 2.0458

Hence log9,000 = 2.0458
